Poor leadership isn’t just being a tyrant or dictator. It isn't always being overly strict, rigid, and just not that nice.
It can also be...
Just being absent.
Tolerating bad behaviour and not recognising the good.
Being so burned out yourself that you have no capacity to lead.
Not giving your team a clear career path.
It can be not being clear about what you expect, then being disappointed in the outcome.
Failing to provide a safe and secure environment, both physically and mentally.
Making someone a manager, then giving them no direction or support.
Leadership is not really talked about in our industry, and there’s not a lot of training out there designed for hairdressers.
We are often made managers because we are the busiest or been there the longest, but never given any training🤷
So it’s just not the way we have done things…but this doesn’t mean we can’t change.
Do you say things like…“I just want to be friends with everyone”
Then feel overwhelmed, taken advantage of and resentful?
Or maybe the vibe just isn’t how you would like it in your salon?
This can only change from the top down, so you must learn how to create and sustain a culture that you love and want to work in every day.

I believe you must lead your team…people want great leaders, it makes them feel secure.
Feeling secure is a big reason people stay somewhere long term.
I recognise now that many of the salons I left over the years failed to create a safe environment and this is why I left.
But I didn't have the skills or knowledge to understand that until I trained as a psychotherapist.
Plus I didn’t have the power to change things anyway or feel safe enough to complain.
One of the big ways I want to contribute to the mental health of all hairdressers is to support the leaders.

At the moment, I see a revolution coming from the bottom with people leaving to go freelance.

I speak to salon owners regularly and I hear them recognise through coaching, they were so focused on putting out day to day fires, and being exhausted themselves that they forgot to lead.
They start to see that what is going on in their salon is due to lack of clear direction and leadership.

All sessions will be recorded if you can’t make it live, but try to come live to get the most from the programme.
